unit 0 : Regular Vs Irregular Verbs

Anglais · 1 Bac SM

1ère année baccalauréat - Sciences Mathématiques

1Course Objectives

This section outlines the specific learning goals students are expected to achieve by the end of this unit. These objectives guide the entire lesson and align with the requirements of the Moroccan Regional Baccalaureate Exam.

Learning Objectives Overview

Objective 1

:

Distinguish accurately between regular and irregular verbs based on how their past simple (V2) and past participle (V3) forms are built.

Objective 2

:

Form the past simple and past participle of regular verbs by correctly applying the '-ed' suffix and mastering its associated spelling rules.

Objective 3

:

Pronounce the '-ed' ending correctly in its three distinct phonetic realizations: /t/, /d/, and /ɪd/.

Objective 4

:

Identify and memorize the most frequently used irregular verbs and their three principal forms: V1 (base form), V2 (past simple), and V3 (past participle).

Objective 5

:

Use both regular and irregular verbs accurately in the past simple and present perfect tenses in context.

Objective 6

:

Correct common errors related to verb form construction and usage in written English.

By the end of this unit, you will be able to handle verb forms with confidence — a skill that is directly tested in written expression, grammar, and reading comprehension tasks in the Moroccan Baccalaureate Exam. Mastering regular and irregular verb forms is one of the most essential building blocks of accurate English grammar at this level.

2Essential Prerequisites

Before studying regular and irregular verbs, students must already have a basic understanding of a few foundational grammar concepts. These prerequisites ensure smooth understanding of the new material.

Verb

A word that expresses an action (e.g., 'run', 'write', 'study') or a state (e.g., 'be', 'seem', 'have'). Verbs are one of the core parts of speech in English and are the backbone of every sentence.

Base Form (V1)

The infinitive form of a verb, without any changes — the form found in the dictionary. It is used in the present simple tense with most subjects (e.g., 'I work', 'They play'). With the third person singular (he/she/it), an -s or -es ending is added (e.g., 'She studies', 'He watches').

Present vs. Past Time

English uses different verb forms to locate an event in time. The present describes actions happening now or habitually (e.g., 'I go to school'). The past describes actions that are finished (e.g., 'I went to school yesterday'). Mastering this contrast is essential before studying verb forms.

Vowels and Consonants

English letters are divided into vowels — a, e, i, o, u — and consonants — all other letters (e.g., b, c, d, f, g…). This distinction is critical for applying the correct spelling rules when forming past tenses of verbs.

Parts of Speech: Identifying Verbs

Action verbs

:

Words that describe physical or mental actions: 'run', 'think', 'write', 'study', 'listen'.

State verbs

:

Words that describe a condition or state of being: 'be', 'have', 'know', 'seem', 'belong'.

Key tip

:

To identify a verb in a sentence, ask: What is the subject doing? or What is the subject's state? The answer is the verb.

Why It Matters

Action verb

I study every day.

I studied yesterday.

Verb form changes to show time.

State verb

She is happy.

She was happy.

Even state verbs change form in the past.

Third person (he/she/it)

He works hard.

He worked hard.

Base form takes -s/-es in present simple.

Vowel in spelling

plan → planned

stop → stopped

Vowel/consonant pattern affects spelling.

Overview of key prerequisite concepts with present and past examples.

Vowels vs. Consonants: Quick Reference

Vowels (5)

:

a — e — i — o — u. These are the five vowel letters. Sometimes 'y' acts as a vowel (e.g., 'study' → 'studies').

Consonants

:

All other letters: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y (sometimes), z.

Why it matters

:

When a verb ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern (CVC), you double the final consonant before adding '-ed' (e.g., 'stop' → 'stopped'). Recognising vowels and consonants is therefore essential before learning spelling rules for regular verbs.

Present Simple: What You Already Know

Structure

:

Subject + V1 (base form) → used for habits, routines, and general truths. Example: 'I work', 'They play football every Saturday'.

He / She / It

:

Add -s or -es to V1 for the third person singular. Example: 'She works', 'He watches', 'It rains'.

Link to new content

:

The base form (V1) is your starting point. Regular and irregular verbs differ in how they form V2 (past simple) and V3 (past participle) from this base form.

Having a solid grasp of these four prerequisites — identifying verbs, using the present simple, understanding present vs. past time, and distinguishing vowels from consonants — gives you all the tools needed to study the rules for forming and using regular and irregular verb forms accurately.
