Hold a simple dialogue about career plans in the media industry or about a current news event.

Use vocabulary in context accurately — not just memorise definitions.

2Essential Prerequisites

Before engaging with this unit, students should have a solid grasp of a few foundational concepts that will help them connect new vocabulary to familiar structures.

news

Information about recent or important events, reported through newspapers, radio, television, or online platforms. Example: 'I read the news every morning.'

article

A piece of writing published in a newspaper, magazine, or on a website about a specific topic. Example: 'She wrote an article about climate change for the school newspaper.'

programme

A scheduled broadcast on radio or television. Example: 'We watched a documentary programme about wildlife last night.'

These three words — news, article, and programme — form the backbone of media vocabulary at this level. Before moving on to new terms, make sure you can use each one correctly in a simple sentence.

Basic Interaction Verbs + Media Types

to read

:

Used with printed or written media: a newspaper, a magazine, an article, a book. → 'I read a newspaper article this morning.'

to watch

:

Used with visual media: television, a film, a video, a programme. → 'They watch the news every evening.'

to listen (to)

:

Used with audio media: the radio, a podcast, music, a programme. → 'She listens to a radio programme on her way to school.'

Notice that to listen always requires the preposition to before the media object. This is a common mistake to avoid: say 'I listen to the radio', not 'I listen the radio'.

Verb

Correct Media Object

Example Sentence

read

newspaper / article / magazine

'He reads the newspaper every Sunday.'

watch

television / film / video / programme

'We watch a documentary programme on Fridays.'

listen to

radio / podcast / music

'They listen to a news programme on the radio.'

Matching interaction verbs with the correct type of media — a key skill for written and spoken exercises.

Understanding digital world terminology is equally important, as much of today's media is consumed online. The following terms appear frequently in Unit 3 and are essential for discussing modern media and jobs such as web designer or social media manager.

internet

A global network of computers that allows people to share information and communicate. Example: 'Many people get their news from the internet today.'

website

A collection of web pages found at a single web address, usually run by a company, organisation, or individual. Example: 'The newspaper has an official website where you can read articles for free.'

channel

A dedicated stream of broadcast content, either on television, radio, or online platforms. Example: 'This TV channel broadcasts news 24 hours a day.'

smartphone

A mobile phone with internet access and computer-like features, used to access social media, news apps, and online videos. Example: 'She checks the latest news on her smartphone every morning.'

Essential Sentence Structures

Subject-Verb-Object (SVO)

:

The standard sentence pattern used in media vocabulary exercises. Example: 'A journalist [S] writes [V] articles [O].'

Conjunction: and

:

Links two similar ideas or actions. Example: 'He reads newspapers and watches television every day.'

Conjunction: but

:

Shows contrast. Example: 'She likes reading articles, but she prefers watching the news on TV.'

Conjunction: because

:

Gives a reason. Example: 'I use the internet to get news because it is faster than a newspaper.'

These simple conjunctions — and, but, because — allow you to write complete, coherent sentences in vocabulary exercises and short writing tasks. Always aim to link your ideas rather than writing isolated, one-word answers.

Wh Questions for Class Discussion

What

:

Asks about a thing, a job, or an action. → 'What does a sound engineer do?'

Who

:

Asks about a person. → 'Who writes articles in a newspaper?'

Where

:

Asks about a place or workplace. → 'Where does a journalist work?'

Why

:

Asks for a reason. → 'Why is the internet important for modern media?'

Forming questions with Wh- words is a skill you will use throughout this unit — both in oral class discussions and in written comprehension tasks. Practice asking and answering these question types with media vocabulary to build confidence before tackling the new content in Unit 3.
