1Lesson Objectives
This short opening section states what the learner must be able to do by the end of the lesson. It mirrors the "Objectives" slide of the course document.
- Identify the Function: understand the communicative function of seeking and giving advice in everyday English conversation.
- Ask for Advice: use a range of polite expressions to ask someone for their opinion or guidance.
- Give Advice: use modal verbs and fixed phrases to offer appropriate and helpful suggestions.
- Apply in Dialogue: practise these expressions in realistic dialogues about school, health and daily life.
- Final Target: hold a short conversation in which one person asks for advice and the other gives a clear, polite suggestion.
2Warm-up: A Situation You Know
The lesson starts from a familiar school situation in order to make the function meaningful before any grammar is presented.
A Familiar School Situation
Your best friend tells you: "I have a Maths test tomorrow, but I haven't studied at all. What should I do?"
Think about what YOU would say to help your friend before studying any new expressions.
- Read your friend's problem carefully.
- Think of at least one piece of advice you could give.
- Keep your idea in mind for the discussion to come.
Guiding question: What would YOU say to help?
Before looking at any grammar rule, take a moment to reflect on your own experience with asking for and giving advice.
- Have you ever asked someone for advice when you were unsure what to do?
- Have you ever given advice to a classmate, a friend, or a younger sibling?
- How exactly do we ask for advice and give advice politely in English?
This warm-up shows that giving and seeking advice is not just a grammar exercise: it is a daily-life function that we use constantly at school, about health, and in our relationships with family and friends, long before we learn the exact expressions for it in English.
Before We Start
Key idea
In English, politeness and the choice of modal verb matter as much as the content of the advice itself.
